Causes and Risk Factors of Type 2 Diabetes

Healthy Lifestyle

The most common ways of managing type 2 diabetes are also the best ways to prevent its occurrence in the first place. Healthy lifestyle practices, such as eating a balanced diet, performing regular physical activity, and avoiding tobacco/alcohol, are some of the best methods to manage and prevent type 2 diabetes. This, combined with monitoring blood sugar levels and regular health checkups, can be a great way to reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes and diagnose the condition in its early stages.

Medication

However, there also exist a few medications that help lower blood sugar levels which work through a variety of biological mechanisms. These medications are prescription drugs and can often vary from patient to patient, so please consult your doctor for more information. Additionally, for those with an advanced progression, insulin therapy also exists for type 2 diabetes, which is used to supplement the body’s production of insulin or provide a special type of insulin. This treatment is helpful because, in some cases of type 2 diabetes, the body’s production of insulin declines over time.

Findings in OneHealth

OneHealth findings were concurrent with the previously mentioned prevention strategies.  Exercise is the most supported preventative factor. More interestingly, there is significant support for coffee as a food that can decrease the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes, with one study stating: “In observational studies, coffee consumption has been consistently associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus.”
